Event Series: SPIA Speaker Series
Kendra Parker is the development and outreach specialist at DNRT, handling the organization’s communications, events, and fundraising. Every now and again, she gets away from her desk to spend time outdoors in nature.
During this talk, Parker will focus on plants grown in Dartmouth that can be harvested for consumption or medicinal purposes. Many of these plants could be found in your own backyard, including broadleaf plantain, often considered a weed in an average lawn. Some plants we will talk about are invasive, meaning they originally came from another country or region, and rapidly reproduce, take over, and outcompete other native plants. What better way to deal with invasive plants than to eat them?
Parker will discuss safe foraging, including how to best harvest or remove plants, as well as ways to respect the land and crop, and how to ensure the plants harvested are fit for consumption. Come with an open mind to learn about all the “weeds” you often pass by, and can instead eat!
